Design for a changing climate

As the UK becomes warmer, with milder, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers, the design of British gardens will need to adapt to ensure they are fit for the future.  Hannah Thomas Garden Design offers intelligent, sustainable planting and design solutions to ensure your garden will continue to look its best for years to come whilst having a positive impact on the planet.  With this aim as my central design ethos I look for ways to:

Select drought and flood-resistant species that can absorb pollution

Plant trees and shrubs that are productive with flowers and fruit

Incorporate diversity in planting to encourage wildlife, create ecosystems and avoid disease

Maximise green space using roofs, walls, hedges, instead of fences

Incorporate and use rainwater storage

Provide shade through planting and hard landscape design

Improve the soil so that it stores more carbon, retains more water and makes the gardens more resilient in flood and droughts

Use sustainable, locally sourced materials with a low carbon footprint, considering recycled options

Use permeable hard landscaping that can help to alleviate flooding
